Child-friendly Brisbane
Allergies Alert - Anaphylaxis
We probably all have a friend, or there are kids at childcare/school who have a severe allergic reaction to things like peanuts. Exposure to certain foods, medications, insect venom, or latex in these individuals can produce a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock.
This allergic reaction can produce such severe swelling of the air passages that suffocation and death may occur within minutes. An anaphylactic emergency requires rapid treatment with medication, usually adrenaline.
So, it's worth taking the time to learn a little more about this condition, you may witness or be minding a child who goes into anaphylactic shock. Or even to just be more mindful when preparing your child's lunch for kindy.
Avoidance of a specific allergen is the cornerstone of management in preventing anaphylaxis. According to Anaphylaxis Australia Inc. research has shown that fatalities more often occur away from home. For more information see the EpiClub.com.au. If your friend's child has this condition, ask to be shown how to use it, it's a simple set of instructions - that could save a life!
